I understand the basics of the game of chess, but am far from a knowledgeable, so I don't feel you have to be a grandmaster chess player to enjoy this movie. I've long known of the legend of Bobby Fischer, the chess prodigy who burned out and disappeared in the mid-70s. The story very much juxtaposes the paranoia of the Cold War era with the paranoia of Fischer himself, while also showing how both Fischer and his Soviet arch rival of the era, Boris Spassky, were affected by the intensity of the level they were playing at, and the pressures put upon them by their respective governments to win.
