Rick (Christian Bale) is a successful screenwriter living a life of excess between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He struggles to find meaning in his life and uses a revolving door of women as a distraction from his loneliness, disillusionment, and his dysfunctional relationship with his brother (Wes Bentley) and father (Brian Dennehy).
The film is divided into eight chapters, plus a prologue, each exploring Rick’s relationship with a different person, mainly women, all of whom alter his life in some significant way. The first, with Della, a free-spirited young girl who feeds into this need for chaos, and the last with Isabel, who finally helps the tortured writer find peace.
