On February 8, 1977, Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) walks into the Meridian Mortgage Company in Indiana, Indianapolis for his scheduled meeting with the president of the company, Millard Hall. After waiting a while, the receptionist tells him Mr. Hall is vacationing down south.
Angry, Tony begins yelling about how Meridian is stealing his land so they can sell it at a higher price, so Hall's son, Richard (Dacre Montgomery) comes to get him and leads him to a private room for a discussion, to calm Tony down. Tony pulls out a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun that's attached to a wire, and places it around Richard's neck and his own body. Then, in full view of the police and media, he drives Richard to his apartment. The wire is set up to discharge the gun if any tension is detected, which would blow Richard's head off.
Tony's cause turns him into an outlaw folk hero. As the media frenzy peaks, the standoff becomes a spectacle of desperation, defiance and blurred justice.
