The story of a number of lonely strangers whose lives intertwine during a dramatic winter in New York City.
Timofey (Bill Nighy) is the Russian-American proprietor of a failing restaurant in Manhattan.
Clara (Zoe Kazan) has escaped her abusive police officer husband in Buffalo and is on the run to Manhattan with her two young boys, telling them they're on a holiday. To feed them, she crashes parties for canapes and searches in bins for food, including the bin behind Timofey's restaurant.
Timofey’s new restaurant manager Marc (Tahar Rahim) is an ex-con going straight, who attends a forgiveness workshop at a local church with his best friend and lawyer, John Peter (Jay Baruchel). ER nurse Alice (Andrea Riseborough) runs the workshop out of the goodness of her heart in her spare time.
When these strangers meet, their lives are changed forever.
